Practical group dog training in Coffs Harbour, built for everyday life.

The Life Skills Group Program is a structured 7-week course for dogs who can work around other dogs and people but need better focus, lead skills, recall, emotional regulation and clearer communication with their handler.

This is not about perfect obedience in a controlled environment. It is about building useful behaviour that holds up on walks, around distractions and in real life.

Is Life Skills suitable for your dog?

Life Skills is not the right starting point for dogs who bark, lunge, freeze, fixate or cannot recover around other dogs or people.

If your dog becomes overwhelmed in these situations, begin with one-on-one support instead.

How the program works

  • Week 1: a 90-minute dog-free workshop covering how dogs learn, reinforcement, stress, arousal, markers and how to set training up for success.
  • Weeks 2–7: six 55-minute practical sessions with your dog, building each skill progressively around real distractions.
  • Maximum 6 dogs: small groups with carefully managed spacing and individual coaching.

Program details

  • Duration: seven scheduled sessions across the intake dates shown above.
  • Week 1: 90-minute dog-free workshop.
  • Weeks 2–7: six 55-minute practical sessions.
  • Group size: maximum 6 dogs.
  • Location: Coffs Harbour and surrounding locations. The exact venue is shown with each intake.
  • Minimum age: 5.5 months.
  • Vaccination: dogs must be fully vaccinated.

Support between sessions

Your enrolment includes Pocket Trainer Support through the private Life Skills WhatsApp group. You can send short questions and brief training videos between classes so Will can help clarify the homework and adjust what you are practising.

This is practical between-class support for the group program. It is not unlimited one-to-one behaviour consulting or a substitute for an individual Reactivity Support plan.

Important information

  • There is no dog-to-dog contact during class.
  • Harsh corrections are not used or permitted.
  • Attendance at the dog-free Week 1 workshop is essential.
  • You must be able to attend most practical sessions to get the full benefit of the program.
  • If group training is not the right fit for your dog, we will discuss a more suitable starting point.

What happens after enrolment?

  1. Choose an available intake and complete payment to reserve your place.
  2. Complete the enrolment form provided after checkout.
  3. Your dog’s intake form will be reviewed.
  4. You will receive confirmation, venue information and preparation details before the program begins.
  5. Week 1 begins with the dog-free workshop.

If we determine that group training is not an appropriate starting point after reviewing your form, we will contact you to discuss alternatives and any applicable refund.

Investment

The complete 7-week Life Skills program is $280. This includes all seven sessions and access to the private support group.

Life Skills is the foundation and prerequisite for future group classes offered by The Operant Dog.
