The Operant Dog · Training guide

Let your dog explore sounds and sensations through a searching game they can control.

Set up as demonstrated

Use the box and materials discussed in your session. Supervise the activity and use only suitable materials that your dog will not swallow. Keep the setup easy to approach and allow your dog to move away.

Start the search

  1. Add a small handful of kibble to the prepared box.
  2. Let your dog choose to investigate and search.
  3. Keep the first repetitions easy enough for them to find food comfortably.
  4. Add another small handful for the next search.

Build confidence gradually

Your dog creates the movement and noise while searching, giving them control of the experience. Add complexity only as their confidence grows. Extra sounds should be introduced gradually at the stage discussed together.

After the game

Put the box away when the searching session finishes. It is a supervised food-search activity, not a box of chew toys. If your dog looks worried or tries to eat the materials, stop and ask for an adjustment.
