The Operant Dog · Training guide

Build duration on Place and help your dog work when the food pouch is away from your body.

Before you begin

Your dog should already understand the Place bed, YES, GOOD and FREE at the stage practised in your session.

Start with the pouch on you

Practise a few repetitions of this pattern:

PLACE → YES and reward → GOOD and reward → GOOD and reward → FREE.

Reward on the bed and vary the time between each GOOD.

Move the pouch to a reward station

  1. Place the treat pouch off to one side.
  2. Cue PLACE and wait two beats.
  3. Release with FREE.
  4. Move together to the reward station and reward.
  5. Take a few extra treats and repeat the Place work.

Build duration gradually

As practised in class, say GOOD while your dog remains on Place, collect the food and bring it to them on the bed. GOOD means continue the behaviour; reinforcement is coming to them.

If your dog cannot hold the position, shorten the wait or reduce your movement. Practise for 3–5 minutes once or twice daily and finish on a win.
