Uh-uh and Place video
The Operant Dog · Training guide
Use the marker language consistently at the stage introduced in your training session.
Start with clear foundations
Build value in YES and confidence on the Place bed before introducing UH-UH. This page supports the practical work demonstrated with Will.
Keep each word meaningful
- YES: the behaviour is complete and a reward is coming.
- GOOD: continue the behaviour; reward is delivered while the dog stays in position.
- FREE: the expected behaviour is finished.
- UH-UH: use only with the consequence and reset taught in your session.
During Place practice
Reward successful stays and release clearly with FREE. If your dog breaks position, follow the handling and reset practised together. Avoid repeatedly saying PLACE or UH-UH without a clear follow-through.
Make the next repetition easier
Repeated mistakes are a reason to reduce the duration, distance or distraction. Keep sessions short and ask for feedback if you are unsure about timing or how to reset. Send a video early in the week so we can adjust the exercise.
