The Operant Dog · Training guide

Build a voluntary choice to move away from food before adding the cue.

Stage 1: build the choice

  1. Present several treats in a closed fist.
  2. Allow your dog to investigate without saying anything.
  3. When your dog willingly moves away, mark YES and deliver one treat from that hand.
  4. Repeat until moving away is freely offered.

Stage 2: add the cue

  1. Say LEAVE IT immediately before presenting or opening the food hand.
  2. If your dog remains clear, mark YES and reward.
  3. Progress to delivering the reward from your opposite hand.
  4. If your dog moves towards the food, close your hand. Mark and reward when they disengage.

Progress at your dog’s pace

Make the hand exercise reliable before progressing to food on the ground. Use the next stage demonstrated in your session rather than jumping ahead. Send a short video early in the week for feedback.
