The Operant Dog · Training guide

Help your dog practise moving between excitement and stillness.

How to play

  1. For green light, become animated and move so your dog follows.
  2. For red light, stop moving and become completely still.
  3. Wait for your dog to stop their own movement. Do not ask for a sit or give a stop cue.
  4. Mark YES the instant they stop, then reward.
  5. Reset and repeat.

Adjust the excitement

If your dog cannot stop or recover, make the next round calmer. Use smaller movements and shorter bursts of play.

What to practise

The goal is for your dog to notice your stillness and make the choice to stop. Keep repetitions short, reward effort and finish with success.
